Mulungu

The keeper of the quiet night

Nature of the tree

The mulungu is a coral tree. It grows mainly in Brazil, in the Atlantic Forest and in the drier forests of the interior, less so in the Amazon region itself. In the dry season it sheds its leaves and then blossoms on bare branches in a glowing orange-red. It has long been known in Brazilian folk medicine and is regarded as a tree of calm.

Inner attitude

The mulungu blossoms when everything else is resting. It does not need full foliage to shine.

The essential qualities

  • calming
  • radiant
  • gentle
  • patient
  • warm

It gives colour in the barren season.

Meaning

The mulungu calls when your mind cannot find rest and the nights are restless. It teaches you to let go and to trust that something blossoms in the stillness too.

Voice of the tree

«Let the day go. I blossom even in rest.»

Encounter & working together

You meet it in the dry season, when its red flowers glow on bare branches. Sit quietly in the evening and let go of a little of the day with every out-breath.

Pay attention to

  • where your mind cannot find rest
  • where you are going through a barren time
  • where you may let go

The mulungu works when you are ready to entrust yourself to rest.

Essence

I come to rest and blossom in the stillness.
