Huayruro

The keeper of good fortune

Nature of the tree

The Huayruro is a tall rainforest tree with pinnate leaves. In its pods ripen bright red seeds with a black spot – red like life, black like the night. In Amazonia and the Andes the seeds have been carried as lucky charms and protection since ancient times; they have even been found in graves from the time of the Inca. The seeds are poisonous. They want to be carried and looked at, not eaten.

Inner attitude

The Huayruro carries light and shadow in a single seed. It does not hide the dark – and yet lets the red shine.

The essential qualities

  • protective
  • lucky
  • radiant
  • whole
  • steadfast

It reminds us that good fortune and shadow belong together.

Meaning

The Huayruro calls when you feel abandoned by luck or can only see the dark. It teaches you to accept both – and to walk with the small light you already carry within you.

Voice of the tree

«Carry me close to you. Good fortune is smaller than you think – and nearer.»

Encounter & working together

You meet it in the seeds that glow at markets and on necklaces. Take a small stone or seed in your hand, hold it for a while and notice what it means to you.

Pay attention to

  • where small good fortune comes your way
  • where light and shadow stand side by side
  • where you feel protected

The Huayruro works when you are ready to see good fortune in small things.

Essence

I carry light and shadow and walk with trust.
