Hazel

The keeper of hidden wisdom

Nature of the plant

The hazel grows as a shrub at forest edges, in hedges and along streams. As early as February, while snow still lies, its yellow catkins hang in the wind – it is one of the first to blossom each year. In autumn its nuts ripen in a green husk. In Irish tradition hazelnuts bestow wisdom, and the divining rod was cut from its branches.

Inner attitude

The hazel is awake early and quiet. It senses spring before it is visible. Its wisdom lies hidden in a hard shell.

The essential qualities

  • wise
  • sensitive
  • flexible
  • fruitful
  • far-sighted

It knows before others see.

Meaning

The hazel calls when you are meant to follow a quiet intuition. It teaches you to trust your inner sensing and to wait patiently until the fruit is ripe.

Voice of the plant

«Listen to the subtle. The answer is already within you.»

Encounter & working together

You meet it at forest edges and by streams. In late winter, look for its first catkins and feel which new beginning is already quietly stirring in you.

Pay attention to

  • where a quiet intuition wants to guide you
  • where you may trust the time of ripening
  • where hidden knowledge waits within you

The hazel works when you are ready to follow your inner voice.

Essence

I trust the quiet knowing within me.
