Birch

The keeper of new beginnings

Nature of the tree

The birch is a pioneer. After the Ice Age it was among the first trees to settle the bare land again. Its bark shines white, with dark markings. Its fine branches hang down and sway in the slightest wind. In spring it comes into leaf early, light green and delicate. In old European customs it stands for spring, light and beginning.

Inner attitude

The birch is light and bright. It grows where nothing yet exists and prepares the ground for others. It needs little and gives much light.

The essential qualities

  • luminous
  • renewing
  • undemanding
  • flexible
  • cleansing

It begins where others still hesitate.

Meaning

The birch calls when something old has come to an end and something new wants to begin. It teaches you to set out with light luggage and to trust the first tender green.

Voice of the tree

«Just begin. The light will follow you.»

Encounter & working together

You meet her at the forest edge, in clearings and by moors. In spring, lay your hand on her white bark and feel life awakening within her.

Pay attention to

  • where a new beginning awaits you
  • where you may put down your burdens
  • where lightness wants to enter your life

The birch works when you are ready to take the first step.

Essence

I begin anew, light and full of light.
