Mugwort

The keeper of dreams

Nature of the plant

Mugwort grows along waysides, on wasteland and by riverbanks – often unnoticed, tall and bushy. Its finely cut leaves are green above and silvery beneath, as if touched by moonlight. In old herbals it is called «mother of herbs»; its botanical name recalls Artemis, the goddess of the moon. In Europe it was one of the great smudging and protective herbs, especially around the summer solstice.

Inner attitude

Mugwort is inconspicuous and yet full of strength. It grows where other plants do not look. It accompanies paths and journeys – including the nightly ones, inwards.

The essential qualities

  • dreaming
  • protective
  • feminine
  • accompanying
  • earth-bound

It keeps watch by the paths, by day and by night.

Meaning

Mugwort calls when your dreams want to tell you something and you give them too little space. It teaches you to honour the language of night and moon and to follow your own inner guidance.

Voice of the plant

«Listen to your dreams. They know the way.»

Encounter & working together

You meet it along waysides and on fallow land. Turn one of its leaves over, look at the silvery side and ask yourself what last night showed you.

Pay attention to

  • where your dreams speak to you
  • where a path lies before you
  • where your feminine, receptive side wants to be heard

Mugwort works when you are ready to listen to the wisdom of your nights.

Essence

I trust my dreams and walk my path.
