Mythical beings

Yakuruna

The keeper of the mirror world

Nature of the Yakuruna

Yakuruna means «water person» – yaku is water, runa a human being. In the stories of the Amazon the Yakuruna live in splendid cities deep beneath the rivers, in a world that is like a mirror image of ours. It is said that they ride caimans and wear snakes as belts. They are considered knowers of the water and its healing powers – and sometimes they take people down to them into the depths.

Inner attitude

The Yakuruna live by another order, quiet and strange. What is above is below for them. Their power is that of the hidden world beneath the smooth surface.

The essential qualities

  • mysterious
  • knowing
  • alluring
  • strange
  • deep

Beneath every surface lies a world of its own.

Meaning

The Yakuruna appear when you only look at the surface. They invite you to sense the world beneath the mirror – the unconscious, the hidden, the dreaming. And they remind you to return to the shore after diving in.

Voice of the being

«Beneath the mirror lies a whole world. Dive in – and come back.»

Encounter & working together

You meet the Yakuruna when you look at a calm surface of water in which sky and trees are reflected. Let your gaze wander between reflection and depth and notice the images that come.

Pay attention to

  • where you only see the surface
  • where a hidden world calls you in your dreams
  • where you need ground again after diving in

The Yakuruna work when you are ready to look into the depths and still stay anchored.

Essence

I look beneath the surface and find my way back to the shore.
