Yakumama
The keeper of the great rivers
Nature of the Yakumama
Yakumama means «mother of the water» – yaku is water, mama is mother. In the stories of the Amazon she is a giant serpent living in the depths of rivers and lakes. She is seen as the mother of all water beings and as their guardian. It is said that she can create whirlpools – and that her waters should be met with respect.
Inner attitude
The Yakumama is calm and immeasurable. She lies in the depths, long unseen, and yet keeps all life flowing. Her power is motherly and at the same time awe-inspiring.

Voice of the being
«I carry everything that lives in the water. Meet me with respect.»
Encounter & working together
You meet the Yakumama by a river or lake, on the shore, in silence. Look at the water for a long time and thank it for what it gives you.
Pay attention to
- where you feel cut off from the current of your life
- where you treat water carelessly
- where a quiet depth is calling you
The Yakumama works when you are ready to honour water as a mother.
Essence
I let the current of life carry me and honour the water.
