Sphinx

The keeper of the great questions

Nature of the sphinx

The sphinx has the body of a lion and the head of a human. In Egypt she is a guardian – the Great Sphinx of Giza has lain before the pyramids for more than four thousand years, gazing east towards the rising sun. In Greek legend she sits before Thebes and poses her riddle to every traveller, until Oedipus solves it. She stands for watchfulness, mystery and the power of the right question.

Inner attitude

The sphinx rests in perfect stillness. She waits, observes and keeps silent. Her power lies in patience and in a clear gaze.

The essential qualities

  • watchful
  • enigmatic
  • wise
  • patient
  • unmoved

She does not answer – she asks.

Meaning

The sphinx appears when you face a question you have long avoided. She invites you to keep still and look closely. Often the answer is nearer than you think – sometimes it is you yourself.

Voice of the being

«Face the question. You already carry the answer within you.»

Encounter & working together

You meet the sphinx in riddles, in ancient images and in the light of sunrise. Sit quietly and ask yourself one single honest question. Hold it without answering right away.

Pay attention to

  • where you avoid a question
  • where you want an answer too quickly
  • where silence shows you more than words

The sphinx works when you are ready to hold the question longer than the answer.

Essence

I hold the great question and listen.
