Mythical beings

Selkie

The keeper of two homes

Nature of the selkie

The selkie lives as a seal in the sea. On moonlit nights she sheds her skin on land and becomes human. So tell the legends of the Orkney and Shetland Islands, of Ireland and the Faroe Islands. Whoever hides her skin keeps her on land. If she finds it again, she returns to the sea. She stands for the longing for one’s own element and for faithfulness to what we are at our core.

Inner attitude

The selkie knows two worlds and belongs wholly to neither alone. She never forgets where she comes from.

The essential qualities

  • changeable
  • faithful
  • gentle
  • homesick
  • free

Her skin reminds her of who she is.

Meaning

The selkie appears when you have settled into a life that is not quite yours. She asks you about your lost skin: what did you lay aside in order to belong – and what do you need to be wholly yourself again?

Voice of the being

«Look for your skin. The sea within you is waiting for you.»

Encounter & working together

You meet the selkie by the sea, in the moonlight and in old stories. Place your hand on your skin and quietly ask yourself: where do I truly feel at home?

Pay attention to

  • where you have hidden a part of yourself
  • where you feel homesick for yourself
  • where you stand between two worlds

The selkie works when you are ready to take back what belongs to you.

Essence

I find my way back to my own skin.
