Mythical beings

Kitsune

The keeper of foxfire

Nature of the Kitsune

The Kitsune is the fox spirit of Japan. With every century of wisdom, it is said, she grows a new tail – until there are nine. She is the messenger of the deity Inari, who watches over rice and the harvest. At many shrines, foxes of stone sit on guard. She can change her shape and makes little lights dance in the night: the foxfire. She stands for wisdom that ripens with time and for the art of transformation.

Inner attitude

The Kitsune is playful and clever at once. She never shows all of herself – and yet knows exactly who she is.

The essential qualities

  • clever
  • changeable
  • playful
  • loyal
  • ripening

Every year of experience turns into light.

Meaning

The Kitsune appears when you may transform without losing yourself. She invites you to see your experiences as treasures that make you wise. And she reminds you of lightness: not everything has to be serious.

Voice of the being

«Every path you have walked is a tail of light. Wear it with joy.»

Encounter & working together

You meet the Kitsune at dusk, at the edge of the forest, in a glimmer of light you cannot explain. List the experiences that have made you wiser and give each one a small light.

Pay attention to

  • where you wish to transform
  • where an old experience has become wisdom
  • where play gives you lightness

The Kitsune works when you let your experiences shine.

Essence

I transform with lightness and carry my experiences as light.
